Domestic automobile sales continue to break record numbers with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers stating that the total vehicle sold in the country during August at 12,63,293 units was the highest-ever achieved in a month.
On the back of the continued robust growth, SIAM said auto sales will exceed the forecast it had made earlier this fiscal.
The overall vehicle sold in the domestic market during August grew by 25.24 per cent from 10,08,712 units in the same month last year. SIAM said the record number in August was driven by best ever monthly sales achieved in passenger cars, passenger vehicles, two-wheelers and multi-utility vehicles segments.
According to the latest study -- India Sales Satisfaction Index -- Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) topped the list of 11 auto-makers, garnering 819 points on a 1,000-point scale.
It was followed by Honda and Skoda, with 816 and 812 points, respectively. Tata Motors found its berth at the bottom.
But which is the most popular car in India? We have here a list of 10 most popular cars .
1: Maruti Alto
The country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India reported its highest ever monthly sales at 104,791 units in August, registering 23.56 per cent jump over the year-ago period.
Priced between 229,000 and 323,000, Maruti Alto was launched in the Indian market on September 27, 2000. Maruti Alto is the best selling car in the Indian market.
The car is popular with the Indian car buyers due to its fuel economy, dependability and pricing.
2: Hyundai Santro
Hyundai Motor India, the country's largest exporter and the second largest car manufacturer increased the prices of its products by up to 1.2 per cent across all models, from September 1.
HMIL's total sales for August, 2010 stood at 50,636 units as against 49,521 units in August, 2009 registering a 2.3 per cent cumulative growth over the same period last year.
Hyundai Santro was adjudged India's Most Dependable Compact Car by JD Power Asia Pacific 2008.
Hyundai entered the Indian market through the Santro whose main rival at that time was the popular Maruti Suzuki Zen.
3: Chevrolet Spark
General Motors also returned good figures in August. It sold 2481 units of the Chevrolet Spark.
A combination of short body overhangs, a steeply rising shoulder line and converging lines at the front, make the Spark a real head-turner.
4: Hyundai i10
A city car (hatchback) produced by the Hyundai Motor Company, i10 was launched on October 31, 2007.
It is manufactured only in India, at Hyundai's Chennai Plant and sold globally (not South Korea).
5: Maruti WagonR
India's leading auto maker, Maruti Suzuki, launched a new WagonR in April this year.
The WagonR has gone through upgrades in 2003 and 2006 but this time around the car is entirely revamped - new Platform, powered by the very fuel efficient K-Series engine and a new cable type transmission.
With an investment of over 250 crore ( 2.5 billion) Maruti is making a fairly strong commitment to maintain its leadership in the compact car segment.
WagonR has been the second best selling car of the country.
Maruti had introduced the hatchback as India's first ever tall-boy design.
The sporty looks of the car has given it a universal appeal among the young buyers.
6: Nissan Micra
Nissan launched its much awaited small car Micra in the Indian market in July, 2010.
Micra is available in three variants XE (the base variant), XL (mid) and XV (the top end).
They are priced between 398,000 to 528,000 (ex showroom New Delhi).
7: Volkswagen Polo
The first Polo was effectively a rebadged version of the Audi 50 hatchback launched in August 1974.
The combination of sporty, distinctive design, a high-performance engine that delivers on fuel-efficiency and power alike, and a host of superior features makes it one of the finest cars for India.
The name 'Polo' has been a source of speculation. Some people believed it was a reference to polar winds or the Marco Polo ocean current, in keeping with Volkswagen's penchant for naming its watercooled cars after winds and currents, but many fans insist that it is in fact a correlation to the Golf's name, because 'golf' and 'polo' are both words (in both English and German) for upper-class sports.

The car is available in six variants which are priced with the highly competitive price tag.

Nice post with nice car images and their features. It is a great job to list the top 10 best cars in India. I appreciate the Maruti Alto is the top position in this list. I would like to share my opinion on this list. According to my knowledge the Maruti Swift should be in second position than the Hyndai Santro. Because, there are many Latest Cars available in the Indian car market. However, the Maruti Swift is best car forever.
